Playdough & Popsicle Stick Shapes

Wow – we love having bits and pieces at home that you can do lots of different activities with, and lolly sticks are definitely one of those items!

Lolly sticks are also known as craft sticks and popsicle sticks.

We’re always looking for simple craft sticks projects and we had lots of fun this week with this colourful construction activity.

Materials

You will need:

  • Playdough
  • Popsicle/lolly/craft sticks (any size or colour will work)
  • Tray to contain the materials (and any mess!)

Instructions

Here’s how it’s done:

1. Place playdough and lolly sticks on a tray.

2. Let your kids get stuck in! They can start off with building flat shapes, and then try some 3D ones once they’re feeling more confident.

For more of a challenge they could even try building a dinosaur, castle, rocket or anything else they can think of!

Some easy ideas to start with would be triangles, squares and rectangles. This is a really good opportunity to talk to your kids about shapes and ask them questions like, ‘how many shapes does a _____ have?’ or ‘how do we know that’s a _____?’
